Learning from case audits
The LSCB is the main commissioner of multi-agency audits, particularly for audits of Child Protection, Child in Need and Early Intervention cases. Activities like auditing should not be seen as one off events but as part of the continuous cycle of planning and learning.
In March 2014 the Chair wrote to all stakeholders setting out the lessons learned from audit in a letter with an attached powerpoint presentation for use with teams.
The purpose of our auditing process is to provide a stringent and consistent approach to assessing work undertaken on a multi-agency or single agency basis with a child/young person and their family through an audit of case records, particularly in relation to the safeguarding role of both specialist and non specialist practitioners.
Following the audit process we will aim to;
- Enable identification of learning points from areas that are working well and those which need improvement.
- Enable Central Bedfordshire to prepare for Ofsted’s full inspection of safeguarding and looked after children with its particular focus on outcomes for children.
- Enable outcomes from a set of individual audits to be drawn together into an overview report which will;
- Enable the CBSCB to carry out its function of monitoring the effectiveness of what is done to protect children and promote their welfare.
- Promote service improvement through identification of key practice issues so that recommendations can be drawn together and action plans implemented.
- Feed into policy and practice protocols and learning and development activity.
It is also important to note that learning from good practice identified through audit and how this can be consistently achieved in order to make a difference for children is at least as important as learning from shortcomings.
